The trial in Germany had been dragging on for almost two years, when Grünenthal offered to settle and to pay the sum of 100 million D-Mark (about $30 million CDN at the time) to the German Thalidomide children – but only if everybody agreed that no further claims could ever be brought forward against the company or the defendants. The German government announced they would provide an additional 100 Million Mark for the children.
